What
is Usability for Games?
We don’t play games
because they are usable, we play them because they
are fun. Yet usability issues cost the game industry
millions of dollars in lost sales and technical
support costs. Poor usability frustrates players
by pulling them out of the game. Addressing usability
issues early ensures that the value of your game
reaches the largest possible market.
In a highly
competitive market place, usability increases the
value proposition. Ignoring usability issues increases
learning time, increases the need for tutorials
and reduces the size of the market. Poor usability
makes games less fun to play by offering pointless
challenges that pull players out of the game.
What is Player Experience?
Player
Experiences are more than high scores. People
play games for specific reasons and have high expectations
for what they get out their games. While players
may not be able to articulate this with a check box
on a survey, it is clear from our research that people
play games for specific reasons.
What do We Mean
by Design Research?
We look at the
player experience created from player interaction
with the game, collecting data and feedback
that game designers can use to improve the game's appeal.
Our detailed reports contain recommendations that marketers,
designers, and engineers can understand and implement.
